3-day exhibition on “Census India” inaugurated at Kala Kendra

JAMMU, Jan 29: A 3-day exhibition titled “Get Yourself Counted – A Postal History of the Census in Independent India” was inaugurated at Kala Kendra, here today.
The exhibition was inaugurated by K K Sidha, Director, Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Jammu & Kashmir.
The exhibition curated by Vikas Kumar was jointly organized by Kala Kendra and Azim Premji University, Bengaluru.
Welcoming the guests, Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary, Kala Kendra, informed that 40 major panels highlighting the theme have been displayed at the G R Santosh Gallery.
He stated that the objective of the exhibition is to highlight the archival history of the Census of India after Independence, with a special focus on its documentation and dissemination.
In his inaugural address, K K Sidha said that the exhibition brings together a novel and extensive archive spanning from 1951 to 2011, showcasing the crucial support provided by the Indian postal system in conducting the census.
He highlighted how the exhibition uncovers the conceptual, linguistic and graphic shifts in the use of postal networks to spread awareness about the census across the country.
“The preserved events, designs and slogans collectively reflect Indian society and make the exhibition especially valuable for students and researchers studying India’s diverse ethnicities and cultures,” he added.
Addressing the gathering, Vikas Kumar explained that the exhibition explores how the post office facilitated the decennial population census, which forms the backbone of India’s statistical system.
The inauguration was followed by a panel discussion featuring Prof Vishav Raksha, Prof Rekha Chowdhary, Dr Ellora Puri, Mrinalini Attrey of the University of Jammu, and Dr Vikas Kumar of Azim Premji University.
