SRINAGAR, Jan 31: A district court here has granted interim bail to former Indian Revenue Service (IRs) officer Vivek Batra in a case involving allegations of assault, attempted rape and criminal intimidation of an elderly Kashmiri Pandit couple in the Rajbagh area.
Batra was arrested on January 8 following a complaint lodged at Rajbagh Police Station and the registration of FIR No. 01/2026.
The complainant, Ashok Toshkhanai, alleged that the accused, along with associates, forcibly entered his residence, assaulted family members and attempted to set the house on fire.
While allowing the bail plea, the court observed that the allegations will be examined during trial and that the accused should not be kept in prolonged pre-trial detention.
The court noted that custodial interrogation has been completed and the investigation is at an advanced stage.
The court also held that the Sessions Court has independent powers to grant bail and emphasized the presumption of innocence and the right to personal liberty.
Batra was released on interim bail after complying with the conditions imposed by the court.
Meanwhile, the investigation is continuing and the case remains sub judice.
