High Scope and Benefits of Teaching-Learning Maths

Mohd Shabir Khatana

There is a high scope and infinite benefits of teaching properly the basic concepts/tools required for learning Maths. First let us see what are the basic concepts/tools required for proper learning of Maths.
Four fundamental operations of Maths viz addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on five kinds of numbers: (1) Natural numbers (2) Decimal numbers (3) Integers (4) Rational numbers and (5) Real numbers. Besides, teachers must also teach BODMAS and basic concepts of geometry.
All teachers must teach the above-mentioned basic concepts/tools with rigorous practice by creating an enjoyable classroom atmosphere so that all students gain full command over these concepts equal to the most genius students of the district. This can be achieved only when teachers teach sincerely and honestly with strong belief, self-confidence, missionary zeal and full commitment.
When students do not gain command over the four fundamental operations, they fail to solve problems within reasonable time. As a result, pressure develops in their minds and they start believing that Maths is difficult. This psychological impact leads to loss of confidence and learning gaps.
On the other hand, when all students gain full command over fundamental operations, number systems, BODMAS and basic geometry, Maths becomes the easiest subject for them.
As per NEP-2020, by properly implementing paras 2.1, 2.2 and 4.23, the following benefits will be achieved:
Strong belief and self-confidence will be developed in students.
Students will become efficient and intelligent; their innate talents will be discovered and nurtured.
Full command over numeracy will support mental and skill development.
Dropout rate will reduce to zero.
Foundational Literacy and Numeracy will be achieved by Grade 3.
It will help in creating competent future citizens in AI, machine learning and data science.
Maths sharpens the mind and develops scientific outlook and personality.
Maths provides foundation for Physics, Chemistry, Technical Education and IT.
It prepares students to realize educational goals.
It develops logical, analytical and critical thinking.
Maths inculcates persistence, accuracy, objectivity, self-control and independent working habits.
Analytical thinking helps students discover new things useful in daily life.
Maths supports cultural, social, intellectual, scientific and national development.
It prepares students for professional and vocational life.
Maths has become part of life and culture and is essential for modern civilization.
It improves decision-making and problem-solving abilities.
Full command over Maths helps in planning, budgeting and administrative work.
For proper teaching of this important subject, there is urgent need for issuing orders/circulars making Maths teachers and their officers responsible for ensuring students gain full command over basic concepts through rigorous practice. Monitoring teams may be constituted in DIETs/SCERT to ensure implementation in letter and spirit.
Once this is done, not only the teaching-learning scenario of Maths will change, but overall quality education will improve across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
