India to halt Russian oil purchases under new US trade deal: White House

WASHINGTON, Feb 4: The White House on Wednesday claimed that India has agreed to stop purchasing crude oil from Russia and will instead increase oil imports from the United States, and potentially Venezuela, as part of a newly announced India-US trade agreement.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the commitment followed direct talks between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom she said share a strong bilateral relationship.
“As you all saw yesterday, the President struck another great trade deal with India. He spoke with Prime Minister Modi directly; they share a very good relationship,” she said.
“India committed to not only no longer purchasing Russian oil but also buying oil from the United States, and perhaps also from Venezuela, which we know will now have a direct benefit on the United States and the American people,” Leavitt told reporters. She further claimed that PM Modi had pledged major investments in the US economy.
Leavitt also claimed that Prime Minister Modi pledged USD 500 billion in investments into the US economy, spanning sectors such as transportation, energy and agricultural products.
“This is another great trade deal thanks to the President,” she said, crediting Trump’s tariff policy and trade strategy for strengthening American manufacturing and attracting foreign investment.
Defending the administration’s tariff regime, Leavitt said it was already delivering tangible economic gains. “The president’s tariffs are working and his economic agenda is working,” she said, pointing to a surge in construction jobs driven by new factory projects across the United States.
“Those factories are being built right here in the United States, and we’re putting Americans to work,” she added. (UNI)
