No compromise on Agriculture or Dairy in India-US Trade Deal: Shivraj Singh Chouhan

NEW DELHI, Feb 5 : Amid opposition allegations over the India-US Trade Deal, union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday asserted that there has been no compromise whatsoever on India’s agriculture or dairy sectors, stating that farmers’ interests remain fully protected.
He categorically stated that India’s staple grains, fruits, major crops, millets and dairy products are completely secure and face no threat from the deal.
“The interests of both small and large farmers have been safeguarded. This agreement creates opportunities, not risks, for Indian agriculture,” the Minister said.
Responding to concerns that small farmers could be adversely affected, Chouhan clarified that there would be no sudden or disruptive entry of foreign farm products into the Indian market.
He stressed that no segment has been opened in a manner that could harm domestic producers and that all key agricultural commodities remain shielded.
On claims made following a recent tweet by the US Treasury Secretary regarding increased access for American farm products, the Minister said Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has already clarified the government’s position in Parliament.
He reiterated that India has not opened its markets in any way that puts pressure on its farmers.
Highlighting export gains, Chouhan said India already exports rice to several countries, including the US, with recent shipments valued at around Rs 63,000 crore.
He added that reduced tariffs under the deal would boost exports of rice, spices and textiles, with textile growth expected to benefit millions of cotton farmers.
Dismissing opposition criticism as misinformation, the Minister said the agreement is firmly in the interest of Indian farmers and opens new global opportunities.
He assured that full details of the trade deal would be shared in due course.
Chouhan said, “Farmers are our ‘Annadata’. Serving them is equivalent to worship. Their welfare is the nation’s welfare, and their interests are absolutely secure.”
