SRINAGAR, Feb 9: The Directorate of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) has launched basic skiing training programmes simultaneously at Gulmarg, Sonamarg and the remote Gurez Valley, aiming to expand winter sports beyond traditional centres.
Under the guidance of Director General Anuradha Gupta, a 15-day Basic Ski Course is underway in Gurez, Bandipora, where students are learning foundational techniques, safety protocols and snow mobility skills under expert coaching. The initiative has generated strong enthusiasm among local youth, turning the region into an emerging training hub.
In Sonamarg, 40 boys and 10 escort teachers from 10 districts are participating in a Basic Snow Skiing Course, while training continues at Gulmarg, Kashmir’s main winter sports centre.
The DYSS recently organised a Snow Festival at CB Nath Meadows in Pulwama, featuring snow cricket, kabaddi, races and cultural events. The department aims to identify grassroot talent and provide pathways for athletes from remote areas to compete nationally and internationally.
