Scores of employees assembled outside the SMC office, saying that despite days of continuous protest, the authorities had failed to reach out or offer any concrete assurances.
Speaking to reporters, SMC Workers Welfare Association president Nazir Ahmad Ahangar said employees had been raising the issue for the past three months but had received only verbal assurances.
“We have been staging protests since Saturday, but so far nobody has come forward to give us any assurance. Our families are facing severe hardships, forcing us to protest within the framework of the law,” he said.
Ahangar clarified that the employees had not gone on strike and were continuing to perform their duties despite financial distress.
“The workers who are protesting are first-shift employees who gather here after completing their work. However, the authorities have paid no heed to our grievances,” he added.
Besides the immediate release of salaries, the association also flagged long-pending administrative issues, including the non-conduct of the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) for the past five years, which they said violates General Administration Department (GAD) guidelines.
They also demanded the regularisation of workers and the filling up of nearly 600 vacant posts.
The protesting employees warned that if their demands were not met by the end of the day, they would be compelled to intensify their agitation.
