JAMMU, Feb 9: An ICAR-sponsored 21-day Winter School on “Molecular Mapping of Genome and Genes/QTL with Special Reference to Biotic/Abiotic Stress and Quality Traits”, organized at the Institute of Biotechnology (IBT), Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu), concluded today.
The training programme was attended by 23 participants from various states of the country, representing diverse allied disciplines. The programme featured invited lectures by eminent scientists from reputed national institutes, providing participants exposure to recent advancements in genomics, computational biology, and molecular breeding.
While addressing the participants during the concluding session, SKUAST-Jammu Vice Chancellor, Prof B N Tripathi, who was chief guest on the occasion, emphasized the growing importance of biotechnology and genomics in addressing challenges related to climate resilience, sustainability, and food security. He encouraged young scientists to effectively utilize advanced research facilities and apply the acquired knowledge in their future research programmes in their respective institutes and Universities.
Prof Tripathi encouraged the participating scientists to collaborate with SKUAST-Jammu in cutting edge technologies. He also stressed upon the need to organize such an intensive training for in-house faculty of allied disciplines of SKUAST-Jammu to equip them with modern biotechnology tools and techniques.
Earlier, Director, Institute of Biotechnology, Dr R K Salgotra informed that during the programme, participants received comprehensive theoretical inputs and intensive hands-on training in modern biotechnological tools and techniques. The course covered a wide range of topics including, molecular mapping of QTL and genes, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, bioinformatics software tools, pangenomics, phenotyping, and high-end biochemical approaches.
The concluding session was attended by senior university functionaries, Deans of various faculties, Heads of Divisions, faculty members, and postgraduate scholars of the Institute of Biotechnology. Certificates were distributed among the participants, who expressed their satisfaction and gratitude for the intensive training received.
The valedictory session was coordinated by Prof Manmohan Sharma, while the vote of thanks was presented by Dr Kapil Tiwari, the Course Coordinators of the 21-day training programme.
