Scores of workers assembled at Press Enclave, carrying placards and raising slogans in favour of their demands. They demanded that they be brought under the ambit of the Minimum Wages Act and paid wages in accordance with statutory Government norms.
The protesters said they have been rendering essential health services at the grassroots level for years, including during the Covid-19 pandemic and polio vaccination drives, but continue to face financial insecurity due to inadequate honorarium. “We are at the forefront during Covid and immunisation campaigns, yet we are paid only Rs 2,000 per month. Our children suffer. We want implementation of the Minimum Wages Act and all benefits given to government employees,” a protesting worker said.
Another protester accused the present Government of going back on its assurances. “We were told our issues would be resolved if we voted for them. Now they say they cannot do anything. When they can double their own salaries, why are they powerless in our matter?” another worker, asked.
The workers urged the administration to acknowledge their contribution to public health and take immediate steps to ensure fair wages and job security.
Police personnel were deployed at the site to maintain law and order. The protest concluded peacefully, with workers saying they would continue their agitation until their demands are addressed.
