JAMMU, Feb 12: National Conference (NC) provincial president, Jammu, Rattan Lal Gupta today reiterated the Party’s firm commitment to ensuring meaningful opportunities and holistic development for women across social, political and economic spheres.
Addressing a meeting of the provincial women’s wing office bearers at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan here, Gupta highlighted the initiatives undertaken by successive NC governments under the leadership of Sher-e-Kashmir late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah to promote women’s empowerment and participation in decision-making.
He said the NC pioneered progressive reforms, including 50 per cent reservation for women in medical colleges, which significantly enhanced access to higher education and professional careers. Referring to recent pro-women measures, Gupta cited free bus travel for women, enhancement of social welfare pensions and increased financial assistance under marriage support schemes aimed at assisting economically weaker families.
Gupta asserted that the Omar Abdullah-led government is committed to implementing the pro-women vision outlined in the Party’s manifesto, with emphasis on active participation of women in governance and public life. He added that under the guidance of Party president Dr Farooq Abdullah, the NC would ensure substantial representation for women in the forthcoming Urban Local Body and Panchayat elections.
Calling upon the Women’s Wing to intensify grassroots outreach, Gupta urged them to spread the message of empowerment, dignity and equal opportunity, asserting that the progress of J&K is inseparable from the advancement of its women.
Among others who were present in the meeting includ Bimla Luthra (State vice president, women wing), Deepinder Kour (former MLC), Pardeep Bali (provincial secretary Jammu), Satwant Kour Dogra (provincial president, women wing Jammu), Shamim Begum (DDC Dansal), Vijay Laxmi Datta (senior leader), Rajni Devi (working president, women wing Jammu), Dilshad Malik & Rita Gupta (vice presidents, central zone), Shama Akther (former corporator) and Pinky Khalsa (senior leader).
