DODA, Feb 15: The strategic Bhaderwah-Pathankot road was restored for the vehicular traffic after it remained blocked for several hours due to a snow avalanche at Baingoth area of Doda district on Sunday afternoon.
The road, which connects Bhaderwah with Pathankot via Bani and Basohli areas in Kathua district, was cleared by 118 Roads Construction Company (RCC) of the BRO.
Officials said the avalanche struck the Baingoth stretch around 3 PM following continuous accumulation of snowfall in the upper reaches.
They said massive slabs of snow fell on the road, bringing traffic to a complete halt and leaving around 50 civilian vehicles stranded, including two traveler buses.
According to them, nearly 200 civilians, including tourists and locals, were caught on the route.
Acting promptly, the 118 Roads Construction Company of the BRO, led by Officer Commanding, Lt Col Jivitesh Razora, along with local police and health authorities, launched a rescue operation despite harsh weather conditions, officials said.
“After hectic efforts, the stranded passengers were safely evacuated and shifted to safer locations. No injuries or casualties were reported in the incident,” they said.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner Bhaderwah said that the joint efforts of the District Administration, BRO, police and medical teams ensured the smooth rescue of all stranded persons.
Snow clearance machines were immediately pressed into service and the road was fully reopened for traffic around 8 PM, he said.
Meanwhile, authorities have advised the commuters to check weather updates and follow official advisories before travelling to snowbound areas to avoid inconvenience.
