SRINAGAR, Feb 15: Markets across Kashmir are witnessing a surge in the sale of dates ahead of Ramadan, with nearly 40 to 50 varieties now available, reflecting a significant expansion in supply over the years.
From being limited to a handful of types in the past, the spectrum of choice has widened considerably, offering customers a broad range in terms of origin, taste, colour and price.
In Srinagar’s Maharaja Bazar and other commercial hubs, shops have begun prominently displaying stacks of neatly packed dates in different shades and sizes, drawing customers preparing for the month of fasting.
Traders say dates become the focal point of business during this period, replacing dry fruits and other items at the front of their stores.
Suhail, a dry fruit trader in Maharaja Bazar, said demand for dates rises sharply ahead of Ramadan.
“We mainly deal in dry fruits, but in Ramadan, dates take centre stage,” he told Excelsior, adding that a wide range of varieties is currently available in the market.
He said the dates are sourced from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iran and Algeria, reflecting a widening supply network.
Popular varieties include Ajwa, Kalmi, Mabroom and Medjool, with many customers preferring darker types like Kalmi.
Prices vary depending on quality, ranging from lower-priced options to premium varieties costing over Rs 1,000 per kilogram.
According to Suhail, consumer awareness has also grown.
“With increased awareness and travel for Umrah, customers often ask for specific varieties,” he added.
Customers said the market has transformed in recent years.
Hafiz from north Kashmir’s Tangmarg said the variety of dates has increased significantly compared to the past.
“Earlier, only five or six types were available. Today, there are many, and the quality has improved as well,” he said.
He added that newer varieties such as Medjool and Ambar have become common in recent years despite being priced higher.
Another customer, Abdul Gaffar from Baramulla, said buyers now have options across different budgets.
“Many kinds are available in the markets. Prices start from as low as Rs 200, and people can choose according to their preference and budget because of the wide range,” he said.
Traders expect sales to pick up further in the coming days, with dates continuing to dominate market shelves as Ramadan approaches.
