POONCH, Feb 17: Historic Mughal Road connecting Poonch and Rajouri with Kashmir valley may reopen for vehicular traffic anytime within next two days provided the weather conditions remain favourable.
The road was closed in January as a precautionary measure following heavy snowfall across Pir Panjal range. Accumulated snow and slippery conditions had forced authorities to suspend vehicular traffic to ensure public safety.
Meanwhile, teams of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are continuously engaged in snow clearance operations.
Sources informed that heavy machinery is being deployed from both ends of the road to restore it for safe traffic movement.
When contacted, BRO officer, Ashish Ranjan informed: “If weather remains clear and if there is no fresh snowfall, the road may be reopened within next two days after a final safety inspection.”
He further said that the road has been rarely reopened in February due to persistent snowfall and if it opens now, it would mark a rare development.
The reopening of Mughal Road will bring major relief to the residents of Poonch and Rajouri by restoring direct connectivity with Kashmir valley.
Official announcement from district administration was awaited till last reports.
