They escaped along with a local inmate from the Dablehar area of RS Pura, Karanjit Singh alias Gugga, around 5:15 PM on Monday.
During the escape, Karanjit Singh allegedly fired at two police personnel, identified as Head Constable Praveen Kumar and SPO Vinay Kumar, with an illegal pistol (desi katta), injuring them.
The injured cops were accordingly shifted to a local healthcare facility, from where they were further referred to Government Medical College Jammu, where they are recovering from their injuries.
On getting information about the firing incident, the Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Nalin Prabhat, and the Inspector General of Police, BS Tuti, along with other senior police officers, rushed to the spot.
As per reports, following the police officers’ visit, six police officials, including an ASI, were placed under suspension, and a departmental inquiry was also ordered to ascertain how the weapon reached inside the observation home.
After their arrest from the Ambala Cantt Railway Station premises, an STF Ambala official told media persons that after escaping from the observation home, the local inmate, Karanjit Singh, reportedly took the two Pakistani nationals along with him and, with the help of an associate, Thakur, travelled to Ambala in Haryana via a sleeper bus. The mother of the local gangster is also reported to be missing from her Jammu residence and is believed to have absconded with her son, who is at large.
The STF official said that their team received specific inputs from the Jammu and Kashmir Police about the presence of the accused at Ambala Cantt Railway Station, and accordingly laid a trap to apprehend the Pakistani nationals-Ahsan Anwar and Mohammad Sanaullah-from the station premises on the morning of February 17.
The local gangster, Karanjit Singh, along with his accomplice Thakur, however, managed to escape on seeing the STF team, he said, adding that efforts are underway to trace them.
Quoting preliminary investigation, the STF Ambala official further said that the Pakistani nationals were planning to leave the country via the UP-Nepal border to escape to their country.
He added that the arrested duo has been handed over to a team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, which, according to him, will seek their transit remand for further investigation into the matter.
