JAMMU, Feb 18: Member Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ramnagar, Dr Sunil Bhardwaj today urged the Government to sanction a dedicated Rector, faculty and non-teaching posts for all offsite campuses of the University of Jammu, particularly the Ramnagar Campus.
He raised this issue during question hour, while requesting the Government to sanction the posts currently being managed on a contractual basis.
As per a statement issued by Dr Bhardwaj, the Government has admitted that these posts have not been sanctioned and the campuses have been functioning on ad-hoc arrangements for nearly 20 years.
Dr Bhardwaj said this has affected academic growth and hampered the goal of providing quality higher education in hilly areas.
Quoting Census 2011 data, he said Ramnagar’s literacy rate is 62 percent, with female literacy rate at 45 percent, which is below the national average.
He stressed that at least one Rector and 10 faculty posts should be sanctioned to strengthen the campus.
Established in 2008, the Ramnagar Campus started with MA Sociology and MCA programmes and has its own academic block and separate hostels for boys and girls.
However, the MCA course was later discontinued and no admissions were held in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 sessions due to shortage of faculty.
The MLA also demanded introduction of new postgraduate courses, including MA English and Science subjects, along with skill-based programme.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo informed the House that proposal is under-consideration and necessary steps will be taken to strengthen the campus.
