SpiceJet signs MoU for 10 aircraft, targets major capacity expansion by 2026

NEW DELHI, Feb 19: SpiceJet has received a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the induction of 10 aircraft, marking a fresh milestone in the airline’s ongoing capacity expansion and network rebuilding efforts.
The development comes close on the heels of the airline’s board approving a calibrated ramp-up of its fleet to 60 aircraft.
The expansion will be executed through a mix of wet and damp leases, along with the phased return of grounded aircraft to service, as the carrier steadily regains operational momentum.
SpiceJet’s recovery has accelerated in recent months. The airline reported that it doubled its capacity in the last quarter, with Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) rising from approximately 55 crore to 105 crore, which is a significant jump that reflects a strengthening network and improved aircraft utilisation.
Building on this momentum, the airline now aims to more than double its capacity during the year, targeting 220 crore ASKMs by Winter 2026. It also plans to operate over 300 daily flights across its domestic and international network.
The expansion strategy is focused on enhancing connectivity, improving schedule reliability, and catering to rising passenger demand, while maintaining a disciplined and sustainable growth model.
Debojo Maharshi, Chief Business Officer, SpiceJet, said the capacity doubling in the last quarter marked a significant milestone for the airline.
He added that the new MoU is an encouraging development as the carrier continues to rebuild operations in a measured manner, with a clear emphasis on restoring capacity and strengthening passenger confidence.
Industry observers say the airline’s structured fleet induction plan signals a cautious yet determined approach to long-term stability and growth in a competitive aviation market. (UNI)
