WASHINGTON, Feb 19: The United States is pressuring NATO to end its mission in Iraq by September and scale back its operation in Kosovo, the Politico newspaper reported on Thursday, citing unnamed diplomats.
These Washington’s efforts are causing a negative reaction from some allies, diplomats told Politico. Reducing NATO’s foreign initiatives is the “not the right approach,” one of the diplomats said.
“It’s not the moment to get out of Iraq the government wants us there,” another diplomat said.
However, most allies agree that the mission in Iraq should be reduced, but in the longer term, the report said.
“No timeline associated with NATO Mission Iraq … or with KFOR These missions are based on need, undergo periodic review, and are adjusted as circumstances evolve,” a diplomat told Politico.
No decision has been made, and any move to end the missions would require unanimous approval from all 32 NATO allies, a process that typically involves intense negotiations and pressure from multiple members, the report added. (UNI)
