SRINAGAR, Feb 20: The Food Safety Enforcement Wing of the Drug and Food Control Organisation (DFCO) today seized 725 kilograms of unlabelled honey during a targeted inspection in the Abanshah area of HMT.
Officials said the stock was found stored without any statutory labelling, in violation of provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act).
The seized honey lacked mandatory details required on packaged food products.
During the inspection, authorities found a complete absence of essential information on the containers, including the product name, net quantity, date of packing or manufacturing, best-before or expiry date, name and address of the manufacturer or packer, FSSAI licence number and storage instructions.
The entire stock of approximately 725 kilograms was seized on the spot, officials said, adding that samples have been collected and sent for analytical examination to ascertain quality and safety parameters, officials said.
Terming the violation serious, officials issued a strict warning to food business operators, stating that sale or storage of unlabelled food products is illegal and poses potential health risks to consumers.
They said violators would face action under the relevant provisions of the FSS Act.
The department also urged consumers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unlabelled food items.
“Complaints can be lodged through the Food Safety Helpline at 104, officials said, reiterating that all packaged food must carry complete details of the manufacturer, date of packing and use-by date,” officials said.
