AI-powered ‘Invisible Shield’ strengthens Aadhaar Data security: UIDAI

JAMMU, Feb 20: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has rolled out a next-generation artificial intelligence (AI)-driven biometric deduplication and document verification platform, significantly enhancing the security and accuracy of Aadhaar enrolment and update processes across the country.
Described as an “Invisible Shield” in India’s digital safety architecture, the new system introduces a multi-layered AI defence mechanism that performs crores of computations to safeguard citizens’ data and ensure the integrity of the Aadhaar ecosystem. The initiative is aimed at reinforcing the principle of one unique identity per resident by detecting and eliminating duplicate records with greater precision.
UIDAI operates one of the world’s largest biometric deduplication systems, where every new Aadhaar enrolment is cross-verified against the entire existing database. The Authority has indigenously developed advanced AI models for fingerprint, face and iris recognition in collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. These models run on high-performance NVIDIA DGX inference infrastructure, enabling secure processing at population scale.
Officials said that each deduplication transaction involves billions of computations, and the adoption of accelerated AI inferencing technologies has substantially improved speed and accuracy. The enhanced deduplication system has already been implemented in several states and will be expanded nationwide in the coming months.
In a major step to curb enrolment fraud, UIDAI has also introduced AI-based document verification that extracts metadata and authenticates it directly from the source of truth. The system uses DigiLocker APIs for real-time verification, while AI tools carry out semantic analysis of submitted documents.
The new platform is expected to reduce turnaround time for enrolment and updates, improve service quality for Aadhaar holders and strengthen trust in the digital identity framework. By combining indigenous AI innovation with high-performance computing, UIDAI aims to set new benchmarks in population-scale digital security and fraud prevention.
