BCCI to fund overseas & domestic tours for visually impaired cricketers

NEW DELHI, Feb 20: Marking a transformative moment in the growth of blind cricket in the country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally committed structured support to India’s visually impaired cricketers, including funding international travel and accommodation for two overseas tournaments annually for both the men’s and women’s teams.

In addition, the BCCI has also committed to provide accommodation for home and visiting sides during bilateral series hosted in India. The visually impaired teams will also receive exclusive access to BCCI-supported stadiums and grounds for domestic and international fixtures, ensuring world-class playing conditions and professional standards.

Reacting to the BCCI’s support, the Cricket Association for the Blind in India (CABI) expressed gratitude for extending institutional support to blind cricket in the country.

Over the past decade, India’s visually impaired cricketers have built a remarkable legacy, clinching multiple Men’s World Cup titles since 2012 and lifting the inaugural Women’s World Cup.

The development follows a series of discussions led by ICC chairman Jay Shah, who has consistently advocated for inclusive growth within the sport.

Shah engaged with CABI’s leadership, including chairman Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar and general secretary Shailender Yadav, to facilitate structural backing for blind cricket.

“We are sincerely thankful to the BCCI and to Jay Shah for their collaboration and for valuing the journey of our cricketers,” said Kivadasannavar.

“To have the support of the BCCI is a moment of great pride for all of us at CABI and a true ‘feather in the cap’ for our players. Together, we can ensure that blind cricket in India continues to grow and inspire many more.”

The partnership is also expected to bridge funding gaps that CABI previously addressed primarily through CSR grants.
