JAMMU, Feb 20: A deputation of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today met the Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and highlighted several long-pending demands concerning construction workers across the Union Territory.
The deputation, led by CITU State president and MLA M Y Tarigami, submitted a detailed memorandum seeking early disposal of the pending amendment case of the Kashmir Constructional Workers Union, representation of CITU in the J&K Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Welfare Board, and implementation of pension benefits for all registered construction workers.
The Union also demanded clearance of pending claims related to meritorious awards, death compensation and marriage assistance, provision of housing loans for construction workers, and removal of procedural hurdles in availing welfare benefits. It further raised the issue of alleged underpayment of wages to Border Roads Organization (BRO) workers and sought strict action against illegal deductions.
According to the CITU, the Deputy Chief Minister gave a patient hearing to the demands and assured that genuine issues would be addressed on priority. He specifically promised early implementation of the pension scheme for registered workers and time-bound disposal of pending welfare claims, including scholarships for workers’ children. He also assured action against illegal wage deductions of BRO workers at Kha Puta Deth.
