Srinagar, Feb 20: Government today informed the Legislative Assembly that the main bridge at Chadoora has been declared unsafe after sustaining damage in recent flash floods, and a detailed technical assessment has been conducted by experts from NIT Srinagar.
Replying to a starred question by MLA Ali Mohammad Dar, the Public Works (R&B) Department said the bridge suffered damage during the recent floods and has been declared unsafe for public use.
The House was informed that the bridge had earlier sustained partial damage during the devastating 2014 floods and was subsequently restored in 2015.
However, the latest flash floods have again affected the structure, prompting authorities to restrict its use in view of public safety.
Following the fresh damage, a detailed technical inspection was carried out by a team of experts from NIT Srinagar to assess the structural stability of the bridge, the department stated.
The department said the observations and recommendations submitted by the expert team are currently under examination by the concerned authorities.
It added that further action will be taken based on the expert report.
Appropriate measures to ensure long-term structural stability will be undertaken as per established procedures and subject to the availability of funds, it stated
The feasibility of constructing a permanent bridge will also be assessed, the department stated.
With regard to traffic management, the Government said the approach road via the New Bus Adda is presently functional and is being used for vehicular movement to maintain connectivity in the area.
The department further informed the House that construction of a temporary abutment for installation of a Bailey bridge is underway to provide an alternative crossing.
The remaining works at the Bus Adda have been tendered and will commence after completion of the tendering process to ensure smooth traffic flow until the main bridge is restored or a permanent solution is put in place.
