ISLAMABAD, Feb 23: Opposition lawmakers from the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) on Monday staged a protest outside the Supreme Court, demanding that all pending legal cases against Imran Khan be fixed for immediate hearing, and a meeting between him and his family members be arranged at the earliest.
Khan, imprisoned since August 2023, is currently serving a 14-year sentence at Adiala Jail in connection with a ?190 million corruption case. He was also recently convicted in a separate case related to state gifts.
Concerns over his health have intensified in recent weeks after rumours emerged over his deteriorating health; particularly reports of his eye problem. His family, party leaders, and supporters have since then raised an alarm about over his medical condition.
The participants in the demonstrations included senate opposition leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and PTI leader Salman Akram Raja, along with other lawmakers, including Amir Dogar, Shafiullah Jan, Muhammad Hussain and Shahid Khattak.
According to a statement shared on social media by the multi-party opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), the protesters sought a full medical examination of the former premier by his doctors, as well as an urgent scheduling of Khan’s pending legal matters.
A video posted by the alliance showed parliamentarians seated on the lawn outside the Supreme Court building, holding discussions during the demonstration.
Khan’s family and associates are reportedly barred from meeting him until the Supreme Court intervened earlier this month, permitting PTI counsel Salman Safdar to visit him in jail. Safdar subsequently submitted a report to the court stating that only 15% vision remained in Khan’s right eye, prompting further criticism from opposition figures over his treatment in custody.
The TTAP had previously organised a five-day sit-in outside Parliament House to press for medical access and legal relief for the former prime minister, before calling off the protest ahead of Ramadan.
Meanwhile, Sharjeel Inam Memon of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) said on Sunday that Khan’s release depended entirely on the PTI’s “attitude.”
