SKIMS tests disaster response for KIWG

Srinagar, Feb 22: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) today conducted a comprehensive emergency preparedness dry run in connection with the upcoming Khelo India Winter Games – Gulmarg 2026, reviewing its disaster response and medical readiness.
Officials said that the exercise was aimed at assessing institutional preparedness, response mechanisms and coordinated disaster management protocols to ensure swift medical care during emergencies.
Director SKIMS, Prof M Ashraf Ganie, along with visiting Minga Sherpa, Deputy Commissioner, Baramulla, reviewed the preparedness arrangements on-site.
As part of the drill, officials said, the SKIMS helipad was kept fully operational and an emergency helicopter landing was successfully executed.
The mock exercise simulated evacuation and rapid transfer of critically ill patients under the Disaster Management Plan, they said.
The hospital’s Emergency Department, Emergency Operation Theatre and Intensive Care Unit, officials informed, were activated and kept on standby to evaluate response time, inter-departmental coordination and critical care readiness.
A fully equipped critical care ambulance was also deployed for immediate patient transport and stabilisation.
Medical Superintendent Prof Farooq Jan, Coordinator Emergency Medicine Dr Samina Mufti, SHO Police Station Soura, and teams of doctors, nurses, technicians and paramedical staff participated in the drill.
Minga Sherpa appreciated the preparedness, particularly the helipad readiness and efficient fast-tracking of critically ill patients.
Officials said the successful drill reaffirmed SKIMS’ capability to handle medical emergencies and ensure high-level healthcare preparedness during major national sporting events.
