460 Athletes compete at Frozen Lake Marathon

LEH, Feb 24: The fourth edition of the World’s Highest Frozen Lake Marathon began at Pangong Lake, 14,272 feet above sea level. The event, started in 2023 as a 10-km race, now features 5-km, 10-km, 21-km, and 42-km categories over two days.
This year, 460 runners from four countries and 21 Indian states participated, including 186 athletes in the 10-km race and 46 in the 42-km full marathon. Women competitors included 16 in the 10-km and six in the 42-km race.
Organized by Thin Ice Adventures with the UT Administration and Indian Army and sponsored by Indian Oil, safety inspections were conducted by NDRF, UTDRF, and other agencies to ensure ice thickness was safe. The race was flagged off by SDM Mohd Ismail and Commander Jagdish MR of the 114 Brigade. In the men’s 42-km category, Tsering Nurboo won first place, Tsering Stobgais came second and Khadim Hussain third. In the 10-km male race, Mehboob Ali, Rinchen Gurmath and Jigmet Stobdan were the top three, while in the 10-km female category, Yeshi Sangdol, Tashi Dolkar and Rinchen Dolker claimed the podium. The remaining 5-km and 21-km races are scheduled for the second day.
