JAMMU, Feb 24: In a historic achievement for Indian mountaineering, a six-member team from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam, successfully summited Mount Aconcagua, South America’s highest peak and the second-highest outside Asia.
The team, led by Col Hem Chandra Singh, Principal of NIM and JIM&WS, was flagged off ceremonially by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on February 5 and reached Argentina on February 8 to commence the expedition. For acclimatization, the team first scaled Bonete Peak (5,050m) before facing Aconcagua’s extreme conditions.
Team members Capt G Santhosh Kumar, Deep Bahadur Sahi, Vinod Gusai, Nb Sub Bhupinder Singh and Hav Ramesh Kumar braved fierce winds and temperatures ranging from -20°C to -30°C, exhibiting grit, teamwork and professionalism. This feat highlights India’s growing prominence in international mountaineering and the world-class training provided by NIM and JIM&WS.
