JAMMU, Feb 26: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Jammu University, today expressed serious concern over the recent decision of the Academic Council of University of Jammu to convert existing Contractual Faculty positions into Guest Faculty across the main campus as well as its offsite campuses.
Addressing a press conference, ABVP stated that the decision has generated widespread uncertainty among faculty members and raised apprehensions regarding academic continuity and institutional stability.
The organization maintained that any structural reform affecting teaching staff must be undertaken with transparency, proper consultation, and a clear long-term academic vision. ABVP observed that contractual faculty members have been contributing significantly to the academic functioning of the University for several years and abruptly altering their engagement framework without comprehensive stakeholder dialogue may adversely affect teaching stability, morale, and the overall academic environment.
“The decision to convert Contractual Faculty into Guest Faculty raises serious concerns regarding academic stability and teacher security. Reforms in higher education must strengthen institutions, not create uncertainty,” said State Secretary of ABVP Jammu Kashmir, Sannak Shrivats.
He urged the University administration to adopt a consultative and transparent approach that safeguards the dignity of teachers and protects the academic interests of students.
While acknowledging the University’s authority to review administrative policies, ABVP emphasized that reforms must prioritize academic excellence, faculty dignity, and student welfare. The organization reiterated that sustainable development of higher education requires regular recruitment and stable academic frameworks.
ABVP JU Unit President Amit Sadotra highlighted that the impact of this decision will be particularly significant in offsite campuses located in far-flung and border regions, where faculty shortages already pose serious challenges. Any disruption in faculty engagement may directly affect students who rely heavily on consistent academic guidance and support, he added and warned that if the concerns of teachers and students are not addressed in a timely manner, ABVP will be compelled to adopt appropriate democratic measures to safeguard academic interests.
