JAMMU, Feb 28: District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Jammu, under the aegis of the Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority, today organised a mega medical camp at Central Jail Kot Bhalwal.
The camp was aimed at providing specialized healthcare services to inmates inside the jail premises.
The programme was inaugurated by Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and Executive Chairman of the Legal Services Authority.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that healthcare is a fundamental right and that imprisonment does not take away a person’s right to life and medical care.
He stressed that inmates must be provided humane living conditions and proper treatment facilities.
After inaugurating the camp, Justice Kumar inspected different sections of the jail, including barracks, kitchen, medical unit, vocational training centres and the Prison Legal Aid Clinic.
He also interacted with jail authorities, staff and inmates to review healthcare facilities, sanitation and legal aid support for undertrial prisoners.
Chairman DLSA Jammu R N Watal welcomed the dignitaries and appreciated the joint efforts made to organise the camp. He reiterated DLSA’s commitment towards the welfare of inmates through legal aid and health initiatives.
The programme was attended by Member Secretary of the Legal Services Authority Shazia Tabassum, DGP Prisons Deepak Kumar, Deputy Director Health Services Dr Sanjay Sharma, Additional District Magistrate Jammu Vidhu Shekhar, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel Anil Sharma and other officials.
A team of specialist doctors, including physicians, cardiologists, orthopaedicians, dermatologists, psychiatrists, dentists, general surgeons, neurologists, endocrinologists, ENT specialists and ophthalmologists, conducted medical examinations and provided consultations. Free medicines were also distributed.
Nearly 500 inmates registered for the camp and received free check-ups and preliminary treatment. The inmates also presented a cultural programme during the event.
Secretary DLSA Jammu Maleeka Sharma presented the vote of thanks and appreciated the support of all departments and jail authorities in making the camp successful.
