SRINAGAR, Mar 3: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag today inaugurated a state-of-the-art Audiology and Speech Rehabilitation Lab during World Hearing Day 2026 celebrations, with Principal Prof. (Dr.) Rukhsana Najeeb dedicating the facility to public service.
The laboratory, set up near the CT Block of MMABM Associated Hospital, was inaugurated by Prof. Najeeb, who also presided over the World Hearing Day programme organised in collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Anantnag and the District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) Anantnag.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Najeeb stressed the need for coordinated efforts among healthcare providers, paediatricians, audiologists and community stakeholders to ensure early diagnosis and effective management of hearing loss.
She said timely intervention, especially in children, is crucial to preventing long-term disability and improving learning and developmental outcomes.
The event was held in line with the World Health Organization’s theme, “From Communities to Classrooms: Hearing Care for All Children,” which focuses on preventing avoidable childhood hearing loss and integrating hearing care into school and community health programmes.
Earlier, Prof. (Dr.) Sajad Majid Qazi and Dr. Khalid Parvaiz from the Department of ENT and Head-Neck Surgery welcomed participants and outlined the objectives of the programme.
A community awareness video was screened, followed by testimonials from cochlear implant beneficiaries who shared their experiences and highlighted the impact of early diagnosis and intervention.
Urfan Manzoor, Manager DEIC at GMC Anantnag, presented an overview of the centre’s activities, focusing on screening initiatives and rehabilitation services for children with developmental and hearing impairments.
