NEW DELHI, Mar 6: Lok Sabha Om Birla on Friday said that development and environmental protection must be viewed as complementary rather than opposing goals, stressing that water conservation is essential for securing the future of humanity and requires collaborative action from all stakeholders, including public representatives and citizens.
Addressing the Water Transversality Global Awards & Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, the Lok Sabha Speaker highlighted the importance of sustainable development and global cooperation in addressing growing water challenges.
He noted that international initiatives such as the International Water Forum are playing an important role in fostering global dialogue and solutions related to water security.
“Development and environment must not be seen as opposing forces, but as complementary,” Birla said, adding that water conservation is central to ensuring the well-being of future generations.
Emphasising the role of citizens in environmental stewardship, Birla said meaningful change would only come when people become conscious and responsible about water conservation, energy efficiency and environmental protection.
“Real change will be possible only when citizens become aware and responsible toward water conservation, energy efficiency and environmental protection,” he said.
Birla observed that water, energy, health and environment are deeply interconnected sectors and that addressing such complex challenges requires a coordinated and integrated policy approach.
Stressing the need for policy coherence, he said inclusive development demands “transversality” across departments and policies to ensure harmony and effectiveness in governance.
“For inclusive development, transversality between departments and policies is essential,” he said, noting that collaboration among institutions and sectors is crucial for sustainable outcomes.
Highlighting practical measures for conservation, Birla advocated the adoption of the mantra of “Reduce, Reuse, Recharge and Recycle” to manage water resources more efficiently.
He also referred to government initiatives such as ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign and the Jal Jeevan Mission, emphasising that their success depends heavily on public participation.
The Speaker also pointed to India’s expanding renewable energy sector as a key pillar of the country’s climate commitments.
He noted that the nation’s progress in solar energy, wind energy and green hydrogen technologies is contributing significantly to sustainable development and strengthening environmental resilience.
“A sustainable future can only be achieved through the power of youth and strong global cooperation,” Birla said, adding that a scientific approach, transparent governance and social responsibility are essential to balancing economic growth with environmental protection.
He also highlighted the deep cultural and spiritual significance of water in Indian traditions, describing it as a life-sustaining element that has long been revered in the country’s civilisational ethos.
Stressing the importance of Janbhagidari (public participation), Birla said efforts toward water conservation and environmental protection must involve people at every level of governance, from panchayats to Parliament, to bring about lasting and meaningful change. (UNI)
