LEH, Mar 10: The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has announced a mega peaceful rally in Leh on March 16 to press for Ladakh’s key demands, urge the Government of India to resume dialogue on the region’s issues, and register public anger over the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA).
Addressing a press conference here today, LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay Lakrook said the rally will begin from Singge Namgyal Chowk and culminate in a large public gathering at the Leh Polo Ground.
Lakrook said people from across Leh district are expected to participate in the rally, which he described as a peaceful democratic expression of the people’s concerns. He added that a similar rally will also be organized in Kargil on the same day by the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA). “In Kargil, markets will remain shut during the rally, while in Leh the markets will remain open,” he said.
Lakrook confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner of Leh has now granted permission for the rally on March 16, which was communicated to the organizers earlier today.
He also expressed concern over the continued detention of Sonam Wangchuk under the NSA and the non-release of Deldan Namgyal and Smanla Dorje Norbu in connection with the violent incident that occurred on September 24 last year.
Lakrook was accompanied at the press conference by several LAB members, including representatives of religious organizations such as Anjuman Imamia, Ladakh Gonpa Association, Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam, Sufia Noorbakhs, the Christian Association of Leh, as well as student and youth leaders and the president of the Ladakh Goba Association.
