JAMMU, Mar 12: Police have solved a fabricated robbery case within 24 hours of its registration in the Kanachak area of Jammu district and arrested the complainant for staging the incident.
A police official said that a man identified as Ankush Sharma, son of Pritam Sharma, a resident of Badgal in Akhnoor, had approached Police Station Kanachak on March 11 and reported that an unidentified motorcycle-borne person intercepted his vehicle near Channu Chak while he was travelling with his wife and relatives from Anand Nagar towards Bawe Tallab via the Ring Road.
He alleged that the accused, armed with a pistol, robbed a silver bracelet, gold earrings belonging to his wife and other female passengers and a gold mangalsutra before fleeing from the spot.
Acting on the complaint, he said, police registered FIR No. 37/2026 under section 307 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and started investigation.
During sustained questioning and technical examination of the case, the police found that the robbery story was false and fabricated, the police official said.
According to him, the investigation revealed that Ankush Sharma himself had staged the incident in conspiracy with an accomplice and had taken the ornaments from the co-passengers.
The police subsequently recovered the allegedly snatched ornaments from his possession and arrested him, he said.
The police official added that Sharma’s accomplice is presently absconding and efforts are underway to trace and arrest him.
Police said further investigation is in progress and it has also come to light that the accused had allegedly taken money from several individuals.
Police also noted that the complainant had immediately approached certain digital media platforms to publicize the alleged incident and advised media persons to verify facts from the concerned police station before publishing such reports.
