AIIMS Jammu performs complex surgery on patient with large adrenal tumor

JAMMU, Mar 13: The Department of Surgical Oncology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has successfully performed a highly complex surgery on a patient with a large left adrenal tumor, marking a major milestone in the institute’s journey toward advanced cancer care.
The patient, who had initially been diagnosed outside AIIMS Jammu with non-specific complaints and imaging suggestive of a left adrenal tumor, had sought treatment at multiple centres before reaching the institute. At AIIMS Jammu, detailed evaluation through advanced imaging and biochemical investigations confirmed the presence of a functional adrenal tumor-an uncommon condition that can pose serious intra-operative risks, particularly sudden spikes in blood pressure during surgery.
Considering the complexity of the case, a multidisciplinary tumor board meeting was convened and a carefully planned treatment strategy was developed. The Department of Endocrinology, under the guidance of Dr Juhi Jamwal, Assistant Professor, initiated pre-operative optimization with alpha and beta blockade therapy. This sequential approach helped stabilize the patient’s pulse and blood pressure prior to surgery.
The patient was also suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Dr Ganesh Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, optimized the patient’s respiratory condition to ensure safe anaesthesia and surgical outcomes.
In a rare and specialized intervention at AIIMS Jammu, Dr Shariq, Assistant Professor, Department of Radio Diagnosis (Interventional Radiology), performed pre-operative trans-arterial tumor embolization to cut off the tumor’s blood supply. The procedure significantly reduced intraoperative risks and minimized potential bleeding.
Following embolization, the patient underwent left adrenalectomy with splenectomy performed by the Surgical Oncology team led by Dr Paras Khanna, Assistant Professor. The surgery was carried out with the support of the anaesthesia team comprising Dr Shruti Sharma, Additional Professor, Dr Slomi Gupta, Assistant Professor, and Dr Sandeepika Dogra, Assistant Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology.
Prof (Dr) DN Sharma, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, emphasized the importance of multidisciplinary care in tackling challenging oncological conditions.
