SKIMS revamps Cancer Consortium to strengthen research

SRINAGAR, Mar 13: The Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Soura, has reconstituted the Cancer Consortium for the State Cancer Institute (SCI) in view of the rising burden of cancer and the need to strengthen multidisciplinary cancer care, research and public awareness in J&K.
According to a communication issued in this regard by SKIMS Director Prof. Mohd Ashraf Ganie, the decision was taken to enhance coordinated efforts in cancer diagnosis, treatment, research and preventive initiatives.
The Cancer Consortium has been entrusted with several key responsibilities aimed at strengthening cancer care and research at the institute.
These include promoting a multidisciplinary approach to cancer management covering prevention, diagnosis, treatment and palliative care, as well as developing effective cancer therapies.
The consortium will also facilitate cancer research, epidemiological studies and data collection to better understand disease patterns and improve patient outcomes.
It will work towards building proposals for the National Cancer Institute and submit them to the relevant authorities.
Under the reconstituted consortium, Prof. Feroz Shaheen, Head of the Department of Radio-Diagnosis at SKIMS, will serve as Chairman.
The other members include Prof. Syed Besina Yasin, Head of the Department of Pathology; Prof. Tanveer Ahmad Rather, Head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine; and Prof. Sajjad Ahmad Geelani, Head of the Department of Clinical Hematology, who will act as Member-Secretary.
Additional members of the consortium include Dr. Abdul Wahid Mir, Additional Professor and In-Charge Head, Department of Surgical Oncology; Dr. Malik Tariq Rasool Shah, Additional Professor and In Charge Head, Department of Radiation Oncology; and Dr. Syed Nisar Ahmad, Associate Professor, Department of Medical Oncology at SKIMS.
Among its other mandates, the consortium will oversee the functioning of the Multidisciplinary Tumor Board at SKIMS and assess the applicability of various national and international cancer care guidelines.
It will also examine the possibility of creating or modifying locally relevant and feasible treatment guidelines for cancer patients at the institute.
The body has also been tasked with recommending protocols for investigations and treatment of cancer patients and exploring partnerships through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and collaborations with Government and non-Government organisations.
Additionally, the consortium will organise community outreach initiatives aimed at cancer awareness, prevention and early detection, and will support cancer research programmes, particularly those relevant to the local context.
