Man arrested for firing at Farooq Abdullah, sent to 7-day police custody

JAMMU: A court here on Monday remanded a man who made an assassination attempt on National Conference (NC) President Farooq Abdullah to seven-day police custody for questioning.
The 63-year-old accused, Kamal Singh Jamwal, was presented before a court and granted police custody to facilitate further investigation into the firing incident targeting Abdullah.
Police sought his custody stating that further interrogation was necessary to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to verify whether the accused had any links with any organisation or individual.
Following the incident, the Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Saturday to probe the attempted firing case. The SIT is tasked with gathering evidence, questioning witnesses, and taking necessary steps to ensure a thorough investigation into the attack on the senior political leader.
Police officials confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and additional details, including the motive and any possible accomplices, are being examined as part of the probe.
Abdullah had a narrow escape on Wednesday night when the accused opened fire at him from behind while he was leaving a marriage function at Greater Kailash on the outskirts of Jammu. He was arrested and was produced in Court following which he was sent to 5-day police remand earlier.
The Police are examining the 63-year-old Jamwal’s background, including his personal, social and possible organisational links, to ascertain the motive behind the firing incident, they said.
According to the officials, the Police are examining all angles including his recent activities and movements before the attack.
Jamwal was reportedly accompanying the wedding procession to the venue, being a close relative of the groom’s family.
Abdullah was among the participants who turned up to bless the newly-wed couple on the invitation of a party colleague whose daughter was getting married.
