Brig Gupta flags US resource-driven strategy behind Iran conflict

JAMMU, Mar 18: A senior US counterterrorism official, Joe Kent, has resigned, describing the ongoing war against Iran as an “unethical war” driven by questionable strategic choices. He is believed to have raised concerns over the selection of targets and stated that Iran does not pose an imminent threat to the United States, alleging that the conflict was influenced by pressure from Israel and its American supporters rather than clear national interests.
However, another perspective suggests that wars are driven by national objectives rather than ethics, a view often associated with Donald Trump. According to Brig Anil Gupta (Retd), the unfolding situation reflects deeper geopolitical motives.
Brig Gupta asserted that the conflict is not merely about nuclear threats or regional stability but about control over strategic resources. Iran’s location in a resource-rich region, coupled with its proximity to vital oil reserves and key maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, makes it central to global energy dynamics.
Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy, sanctions and military posturing can be seen as steps towards weakening Iran’s ability to independently control its own resources, while simultaneously strengthening U.S leverage over the entire Middle East and West Asia. “When you dominate the flow of oil, you hold a grip on global markets, energy prices, and ultimately political power across continents,” highlighted Brig Gupta. Brig Gupta concluded that the broader objective appears to be establishing dominance over key resources, shaping the balance of global power beyond immediate security concerns.
