JAMMU, Mar 20: The vibrant spirit of tradition and sport came alive in Sumah as a grand wrestling tournament (Dangal) was held on the second day of the Chaitra Chaturthi fair, coinciding with the Hindu New Year. The event showcased the rich sporting heritage of the region, attracting renowned wrestlers from across India and abroad and drawing thousands of spectators.
The tournament was graced by chief guest MLA Akhnoor Mohan Lal Bhagat, along with dignitaries including former president of Yuva Rajput Sabha Rajan Singh Happy, Vikram Singh, former Sarpanch Ashwani Sharma, former councillor Rakesh Malhotra, Suman Singh, Madan Lal, BJP Mandal President Sohal-Sungal Shamshar Das, and Mandal President Jourian Neeraj Sharma.
Organized by the Peer Baba Dangal Committee, notable contributions came from President Harish Sharma, Sanjay Sharma, Tilak Raj, Vinod, Rakesh, Keval, Shubham, Abhay, Rinku, Yograj, Ravi, Bittu, former Sarpanch Rampal, Ganesh Sharma, and other dedicated members.
The highlight was the grand bout worth Rs 2,51,000 between Iran’s Ahmad Mirza and Bina Mandothi of Haryana, with Mirza emerging victorious to claim the prestigious “Sumah Kesari” title. In another major bout of Rs 2, 00,000, Russia’s Ibrahim faced Major from Dera Baba, Punjab, with Major winning. Iran’s Hadi was defeated by Rajat from Himachal Pradesh, while Uttar Pradesh’s Kalwa Gurjar beat Mohit from Punjab in an additional thrilling match.
Addressing the gathering, MLA Mohan Lal Bhagat emphasized wrestling’s popularity in Akhnoor and announced plans to establish a modern wrestling arena to provide athletes a high-quality platform. He assured continued support for grassroots sports development, encouraging youth to achieve excellence nationally and globally.
