JKRLM expands livelihood outreach to border village in Kupwara

SRINAGAR, Mar 20: In a significant push towards women empowerment and rural development in border areas, Jammu & Kashmir Rural Livelihoods Mission (JKRLM) has extended its activities to Simari, the last village of India along the Line of Control in Teetwal.
Under the initiative, 14 women have been mobilized into a Self Help Group (SHG) and have begun collective livelihood activities focused on needlework and handicrafts. Utilizing their traditional skills, the women are producing handcrafted and embroidered items, creating a sustainable source of income in this remote border region.
With continuous guidance and institutional support from JKRLM, the SHG members are working cohesively, aiming for financial independence while strengthening community cooperation and self-reliance. The initiative highlights the mission’s focus on last-mile delivery of development, ensuring that even the most distant and sensitive areas benefit from livelihood programs.
The development was highlighted by Arsheed Ahmad Bhat, associated with JKRLM Teetwal, who underscored the importance of empowering rural women through organized community institutions. He noted that such efforts not only enhance income opportunities but also promote social cohesion and confidence among women in border villages.
The initiative reflects JKRLM’s broader commitment to promoting women-led development, financial inclusion, and rural entrepreneurship across J&K. The success of the SHG in Simari is being seen as a model for similar interventions in other remote villages of Kupwara district.
Officials believe that the progress in Simari will inspire more women in nearby areas to form SHGs and participate in income-generating activities, further strengthening inclusive rural development in the region.
