JAMMU, Mar 22: Police in Miran Sahib Area here claimed to have arrested a notorious drug peddler and recovered 262 grams of heroin-like substance worth approximately Rs 1.5 Crores and Rs 1.5 lakh cash from his possession.
A police official said that a team from Miran Sahib Police Station had laid a naka at Tutray Chowk on Ring Road on the evening of March 21 as part of intensified checking to curb drug smuggling.
Around 7:40 PM, he said, the police team noticed a suspicious individual moving towards the naka point.
On seeing the police presence, the person tried to evade checking and attempted to flee from the spot, which raised suspicion, the police official said.
Acting swiftly, the alert police team chased and apprehended the suspect on-the-spot, he said.
During his search, approximately 262 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered, he said, adding that police also seized a mobile phone, Rs 1.5 lakh cash, and a weighing machine, indicating involvement in drug peddling activities.
According to the police official, the accused, who was later identified as Harpal Singh of Ward number 14, Kathua, was accordingly arrested and booked in case FIR number 44/2026 under sections 8/21/22/27-A of the NDPS Act registered at Police Station Miran Sahib.
Police have started further investigation into the matter to trace the source of the contraband and to identify forward and backward linkages of the drug network.
Pertinently, the arrest and seizure was made by a team of Police Station Miran Sahib led by PSI Rajan Choudhary, with assistance from Head Constable Arjun Kumar and SPOs Lucky Choudhary, Suresh Kumar and Gharu Singh, under the supervision of SHO Miran Sahib, Inspector Jatinder Singh.
