Nearly one-third cooperatives non-functional in J&K

SRINAGAR, Mar 26: Over 30 percent of cooperative societies in J&K are non-functional, according to official data that places Srinagar and Jammu districts at the top in defunct units, and Baramulla and Budgam as leaders in functional cooperatives.

In Kashmir division, Srinagar has the highest number of non-functional societies at 104 out of 163 registered units-around 63.8 percent-making it the lowest-performing district in the division.
In Jammu division, Jammu district records 166 non-functional societies out of 286-about 58 percent-the highest in the region.
On the functional side, Baramulla has the highest number of active cooperatives in Kashmir with 140 functional societies out of 154-about 90.9 percent-while Budgam, with 158 functional units out of 204-around 77.5 percent-has the highest number in absolute terms across districts in the division.
In Jammu division, Jammu district also leads in functional societies with 120 units, followed by Rajouri with 68 functional societies.
Overall, J&K has 1,861 registered cooperative societies, of which 1,299 are functional and 562 non-functional, accounting for about 30.2 percent of the total.
In Kashmir division, a total of 1,016 societies are registered, including 782 functional and 234 non-functional.
District-wise, Anantnag has 99 societies with 83 functional and 16 non-functional; Bandipora 50 with 43 functional and 7 non-functional; Baramulla 154 with 140 functional and 14 non-functional.
Budgam has 204 cooperative societies, of which 158 are functional and 46 non-functional. Ganderbal has 58 societies, including 57 functional and one non-functional. Kulgam records 63 societies with 62 functional and one non-functional. Kupwara has 73 societies, including 62 functional and 11 non-functional.
Pulwama has 97 societies, with 73 functional and 24 non-functional. Srinagar records 163 societies, of which only 59 are functional while 104 are non-functional. Shopian has 55 societies, including 45 functional and 10 non-functional.
In the Jammu division, a total of 845 cooperative societies are registered, of which 517 are functional and 328 non-functional. Jammu district accounts for 286 societies, including 120 functional and 166 non-functional. Udhampur has 68 societies with 59 functional and nine non-functional.
Kathua has 45 societies, of which 42 are functional and three non-functional, while Reasi has 31 societies with 24 functional and seven non-functional. Kishtwar has 22 societies, including 17 functional and five non-functional. Ramban has 25 societies, with 24 functional and one non-functional.
Doda records 74 societies, including 46 functional and 28 non-functional. Rajouri has 134 societies with 68 functional and 66 non-functional. Poonch has 65 societies, including 44 functional and 21 non-functional.
Samba has 23 societies with 18 functional and five non-functional, while CAD Jammu has 72 societies, of which 55 are functional and 17 non-functional.
The Government, in data shared on the status of cooperative societies in the Union Territory, said that no financial assistance exceeding Rs 25 lakh has been provided to any cooperative society over the past three years.
It further stated that no instances of financial irregularities, diversion or misappropriation of funds, or non-utilisation of sanctioned funds have been detected.
It has been also noted that no cases have been referred to the Anti-Corruption Bureau or other agencies, and no recovery proceedings have been initiated during this period.
