Piyush Goyal says Vijay may struggle to win 3-4 seats

CHENNAI, Mar 31 : Senior BJP leader and union Minister Piyush Goyal, who is also the election in-charge of Tamil Nadu, on Monday took a swipe at actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Founder Vijay, saying it would be difficult for him to win even three or four seats in the April 23 Assembly elections.
Speaking at the airport on his arrival to further strengthen the strategy of the NDA, headed by the main Opposition AIADMK to take on the DMK, Mr Goyal said Vijay lacked a clear understanding of Tamil Nadu’s people, culture and political landscape.
While the actor, who is living in a dream, enjoys popularity among the fans, it may not necessarily translate into votes, he observed.
Drawing comparisons with past examples, the BJP leader noted that several film personalities had entered politics but failed to achieve electoral success.
He pointed out that leaders like AIADMK Founder and matinee idol MGR and the charismatic J. Jayalalithaa rose to power only after decades of public service and political experience.
Mr Goyal also remarked that Vijay, whose party has declared BJP as its ideological adversay and was contesting the polls alone despite promising share in power if his party was voted to power, might secure some votes, but crossing even the three or four seat mark would be a challenge for him as fan support would not convert into votes, though he draws huge crowd for his rallies and people outreach programmes.
Asserting that people of Tamil Nadu are yearning for a change and wanted the golden era rule of late Jayalalithaa, Mr Goyal said the strong NDA coalition would definitely defeat the ruling DMK, which is in alliance with the Congress and termed both of them as corrupt.
Assuring that the NDA would ensure a good governance taking the welfare of the farmers and women, he said the people would oust the DMK regime and install the NDA government to ensure state’s all round development and roo out corruption.
