MOSCOW, Apr 2: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz discussed the Middle East conflict, the UK Prime Minister’s office said in a statement.
“The Prime Minister spoke to the Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, this afternoon to discuss the conflict in the Middle East… It was crucial partners stepped up to ensure safe shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, the leaders agreed,” the statement said.
On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump said that he was seriously considering withdrawing the US from NATO after the alliance refused to assist in the operation against Iran.
Earlier, Estonian Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur complained that the US administration is not clearly explaining what assistance it wants from its allies in the Middle East.
Pevkur reportedly stated that he has not received any further instructions regarding the specific assistance Washington seeks since then.
rump had first “said that (NATO) should do something together with them (the US) together in the Middle East, then he said we don’t need the allies, and then he said that the allies should do it themselves So in just three days you have three different direction messages,” he noted.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran responded by striking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
The escalation around Iran has led to the de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for deliveries of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf countries to the global market, and has also affected the level of oil exports and production in the region. As a result, fuel prices are rising in most countries around the world. (UNI)
