The Supreme Court has stayed the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case over his comment about the Modi surname. The court ruled that the trial judge must offer reasons for imposing maximum punishment for a non-cognizable offence. The Congress leader was sentenced to two years in jail by a Gujarat court over comments he made during a 2019 election rally. His conviction led to his disqualification as an MP under the Representation of People Act.
