Taiwan has unveiled its first domestically built submarine, named ‘Narwhal’, as part of efforts to boost its naval defense capabilities amid a growing threat from China. The submarine, with a price tag of $1.53 billion, will be armed with US-manufactured torpedoes and incorporate a combat system from Lockheed Martin. Details about its size and capability have not been disclosed due to security concerns. China’s defense ministry criticized the move, calling it “idiotic nonsense”.
