The US unit of the Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) was hit by a cyberattack, causing disruption to US Treasury trades. ICBC had to send settlement details to parties via a messenger carrying a USB stick after the hacked systems were disconnected. The attack was orchestrated by the Lockbit ransomware group, which is also responsible for previous attacks on Boeing, ION Trading UK, and the UK’s Royal Mail. This incident highlights the potential risks of cyberattacks on the financial system. The ICBC breach is under investigation, and recovery efforts are underway.
