JAMMU, July 7: An ancient temple in Narain Khoo area of Nagrota was desecrated by one individual, who has been arrested by the police.
Addressing media persons at SDPO office Nagrota, SP Jammu Rural, Brijesh Kumar Sharma, told the media persons that the idols of an ancient temple at Narain Khoo area were vandalised and mats set on fire by a masked man late on Saturday night.
After receiving a written complaint from one Subash Chander son of Paras Ram of Narain Khoo, he said, Police Station Nagrota registered an FIR number 194/2024 under Sections 298 and 326 of the BNS.
Post registration of the FIR, the police officer said that an investigation was taken up by a team of Police Station Nagrota led by SDPO Nagrota, with the assistance of a team of FSL, sniffer dogs, and the CCTV footages of the area.
He said as the investigation proceeded, 3-4 suspects were detained for questioning, with one among them identified as Arjun Sharma of Narain Khoo confessing to his involvement in the act during sustained questioning.
He said the accused had an old rivalry with the priests of the temple and was not happy with the alleged performance of black magic within the temple premises owing to which he dislocated several idols and put the mats of the temple on fire.
Appreciating the swift action of the SDPO Nagrota and other teams investigating the crime, the SP Jammu Rural, Brijesh Kumar Sharma said, “had police not cracked the case on time, there was possibility of communal flare-up in the incident. So, I take this opportunity to appreciate my team investigating the crime.”
He also thanked local people, media and other stakeholders for their support in the matter.
Meanwhile, former MLA Nagrota and senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana also appreciated the District Administration and Police for taking serious note of the incident and reacting promptly to bring the culprit to book.
“I must compliment the Jammu and Kashmir Police and civil administration for prompt action in the matter and apprehending the culprit Arjun who is also a local and has according to the police confessed to the act before a magistrate and attributed his action to a family rivalry dispute,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
