Old Road Leh named after former Union Minister P Namgyal

LEH: The Old Road Leh was formally named after the former Union Minister of State, late P Namgyal by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) on Friday with a symbolic ceremony. Announcement to name the road after him was made by LAHDC in June this year during the 1st death anniversary of P. Namgyal.
The Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson, MP Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Executive Councillors, Councillors, former CECs, former State Cabinet Ministers, political leaders, family members, and the relatives of late P Namgyal attended the event. CEC and MP highlighted the contributions of late P Namgyal to the entire Ladakh society and stated that dedicating the road in his name will be a tribute from the Hill Council to him. Gyalson directed DC Leh to mention the renamed road, i.e. P Namgyal Road, in the referenced official documents today onwards.
P Namgyal was one of the towering leaders of Ladakh in the post-independent era. His contributions to Ladakh’s development spanned over five decades as Namgyal served the landlocked region three times as Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha and three times as Member Legislative Council in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. P. Namgyal was a veteran Congress leader and he represented Ladakh from Ladakh Parliamentary constituency in 7th , 8th and 11th Lok Sabha.
He served as Union Deputy Minister, Surface Transport and Parliamentary Affairs and later as Union Minister of State, Chemical and Petrochemical and Parliamentary Affairs under the Prime Ministership of late Rajiv Gandhi from 1988 to 1989.
P. Namgyal was known for being a principled leader with an unimpeachable integrity at the national level. He was also involved in getting Scheduled Tribe status and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council for Ladakh.
P. Namgyal was a staunch supporter of the Union Territory demand for Ladakh and would always advocate for Union Territory with Legislature for Ladakh.
