JAMMU, Oct 8: To take stock of the situation following the recent heavy rains and floods that caused considerable damage, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Dr Devansh Yadav, visited the Gorkha Nagar area, here today.
During the recent spell of heavy rainfall, the Tawi River witnessed a sharp rise in water level, leading to flooding and significant damage to the surrounding infrastructure, including the crematorium.
The boundary walls and pathways were affected and a large quantity of silt, debris and garbage got deposited in and around the premises, making it difficult for the local population to access the site.
During the visit, Commissioner visited the Gorkha Nagar cremation ground is one used by residents of Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort and adjoining localities for performing the last rites of their loved ones.
He instructed the officials to expedite the repair of damaged infrastructure and ensure that the site is restored in a time-bound manner.
Speaking on the occasion, Yadav said, “The recent floods caused significant damage across various parts of Jammu city and the Gorkha Nagar crematorium was among the affected sites. The Corporation immediately initiated clearance and restoration activities to provide relief to the residents. A detailed proposal has already been submitted to the government for the release of funds to carry out comprehensive flood restoration works in different parts of the city.”
“As soon as the funds are released, all pending works will be executed at the earliest. However, keeping in view the sentiments and immediate needs of the people, the Jammu Municipal Corporation has already begun temporary restoration and repair work at the cremation ground,” he said.
Yadav reiterated JMC’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness, sanitation and basic amenities at all public facilities, including cremation grounds, graveyards and other community infrastructure.
Among others, who were accompanied the JMC Commissioner included Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Health Officer Dr Vinod Sharma and Executive Engineer Bashir Ahmed Kichloo.
