JAMMU, Oct 16: World Spine Day was observed today by Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu and the Senior Citizens Joy Society, Channi Himmat, with a focus on preventing spinal ailments and creating awareness among the public.
At GMC Jammu, under the patronage of Principal Dr Ashutosh Gupta and guidance of Head of Orthopaedics Dr Sanjeev Gupta, a “Meet the Press” programme was organized at Dr N S Pathania Hall. The event brought together media representatives and patients who had undergone spine procedures at the hospital.
In his keynote address, Dr Bias Dev emphasized that spine injuries predominantly affect young patients, often resulting in severe neurological impairment, prolonged financial burden, and dependence on others. He highlighted the importance of accident prevention, including the need for safe pedestrian and cyclist pathways and regulated motorbike speeds, to reduce spine-related disabilities.
Several patients shared their experiences, while faculty members addressed common misconceptions about spinal ailments during interactions with the press.
Principal Dr Ashutosh Gupta highlighted that the Orthopaedics Department provides comprehensive care, including fracture treatment, spine injury management, joint replacement, arthroscopy, and tumor resection and reconstruction.
As part of the celebrations, lectures on spine health were also conducted for patients and attendants at the Bone and Joint Hospital OPD, in the presence of Medical Superintendent Dr Sanjay Arora.
Meanwhile, Senior Citizens Joy Society, Channi Himmat, celebrated World Spine Day under the chairmanship of Dr Shreyansh Kumar Jain, State Yoga Commissioner (J&K) and chairman of the Society. The event featured an enlightening symposium on “Spinal Disorders and Their Management.” The programme began with a welcome address by Ashok Khajuria, secretary of the Society, who introduced the theme and highlighted the global significance of observing World Spine Day.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shreyansh Kumar Jain, who presented an in-depth talk on the anatomy and functioning of the spinal cord. He further stated that while spinal disorders can cause severe discomfort and, in some cases, paralysis, they are largely manageable and often curable through Yoga, Naturopathy, simple home remedies, and proper lifestyle adjustments.
