Bangladesh EC Commissioner calls for creation of robust 24-hr cyber system to counter AI misuse ahead of national polls

DHAKA, Oct 22 : Bangladesh’s Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, citing the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) worldwide, has called for the creation of a 24-hour system in the EC to combat all possible subversive activities in the digital field, ahead of the upcoming national elections in February 2026.

Speaking at a seminar here, Nasir Uddin referred to issues ranging from stopping misinformation to preventing cyber-attacks.

The seminar was held on the topic of AI integration in the national polls and countering disinformation, as per state media.

“The misuse of AI has become a pressing global concern. We have planned to establish a central cell to address misinformation and disinformation,” he said.

For this purpose, the CEC urged those attending the seminar to provide concrete and practical recommendations to counter AI misuse in the upcoming national elections, emphasising the need for a robust 24-hour monitoring system.

Outlining the challenge of tackling subversive attempts from the country’s more remote and hard-to-reach areas, such as the hill tracts or offshore islands, he added, “I don’t want just policy guidelines. We need concrete plans — who will work, how many people will be needed, and how we will get information from remote areas.” (UNI)
